Ta ...just a common cicada. They fly into the house all night long. The bloody cat loves 'em & he grabs them & puts them silently beside you in bed to show you what he caught.
Then...it starts drumming right beside your ear ... on your pillow as you wake up in the dark with a huge overweight cat catching a giant screaching bug on your head. Bit like putting your face in a blender listening to AC/DC at full volume.
They are regarded as the worlds loudest insect & have been measured over 120 bd..& thats above human pain threshhold.
They live underground for up to 7 years & then live only a few weeks once they emerge to mate.

Darn nice photograph of a critter that I would not like to meet. I have a hard time with anything that has more then 4 legs...
Very nice pictures H, it shows us the beauty of close up
Great shot 'gus. It brought back some memories of a kid back home in the midwest. Your right about how loud they are. It would be hard to sleep at night sometimes.
They were big & juicy, but don't taste like chicken
I've heard them before, but never seen one, Ugly eh!! Great pictures though. Thanks Hmngs
They are certainly loud gubbs...get deep into the scrub & you start shouting over them to talk.
They also wee on your face as you ride along on your bike. I have an open face helmet & every so often you feel it hit you. I eat most bugs that hit me on the face...sometimes you get a sweet one & sometimes a sour one (lucky dip really) but cicada wee is out for me.
