This photo was taken seconds after the baby was delivered by C section.

I think it captures the moment well. I would be interested in your comments.
C&C always welcomed.

Cheers

Chris

Wonderful capture. Nice tonal range, the BW suits it nicely! The kid may hate it when he's older for obvious reasons but it has a very "Discovery Channel" feel to it.

    Chris-
Great capture! Would love to see more! iloveyou.gif

My sister and a friend have both asked me to photograph their babies' births this spring. I'm especially worried about hospital lighting. I'd like to avoid flash as I think it would be disruptive for all, especially the newborn! Plus, I hate flash.. :D Any tips you can share???

    Chris.

I don't know if you are the father of the child but that doesn't matter.
It is not common to watch baby's births in Portugal.
But, 29 and 28 years ago I have been to my children's birth.
Unfortunately I only photograph the second one.
I can't show it here because it is not digital. Yet.
These were unforgettable moments of my like.

You did well shooting this birth.
I hope you do have more and better pictures of this birth.
Not t be shown. It's too private I think.

The baby will like to see them when he grows old.:D

Nice shot! I have a brother who is much younger (14 years) and I was lucky enough to be at his birth - amazing experience. Certainly one of the most emotional moments of my life. I wish I had a photo this good to remember it!

    Congratulations!

Thanks all for the comments. It was an amazing experience (even for the second time!) Such a priviledge to be there for the arrival - and excitment finding out it was a boy.

    Kim,

I used ISO 400 and didn't use flash. The surgery lights are very bright, and I over-exposed a few of the actual 'removal' because the light was so bright and I metered (spot) on something else, so a few shots of the head emerging are a bit bright.

I had an empty card and shot about 50 images from the start until when little James was wrapped and handed to mum. Most are ok - except for the first few as mentioned. I felt a little self conciuos at first not wanting to get in the way - but I thought "I'm not going to get another chance so what the heck?"

Every one is so busy they don't even notice you - so a lot of it is your attitude as well - don't worry- just keep shooting!

    Good luck with your shoot.
    C&C always welcomed.

    Cheers

Chris, it is a great photo and it is a priceless memory. All the best to your family on this joyous occasion.

A note from my wife who is a midwife: "If anyone reads this and plans similar shots: do few and spend the rest of time with your partner. 50 photos makes it a shoot not a birth."

Chris- Thanks a lot for the advice. I took a look at your website last night and you have some some really fantastic shots! You inspired me to get my camera out and get some more candid shots of my kids... even in low light! (gasp!) rolleyes1.gif

    Keep up the great work!
