Hello all,
New to the board and any advise on this would be great!. I've got a lot invested in my Canon GL2 video camera gear and recently got into still photography with my purchase a 30d. Biggest lens so far is a 70-200 2.8 IS L :D. Anyway my tripod is very solid and my fluid head real nice for video panning. My tripod is a Bogen 3046 with a 503 head. Anyway I'm saving money for more new glass and was wondering..... Should I buy a new head for my tripod, use what I got or buy a new tripod/ head more specialized for my camera? I've mounted it up and seems fine ,but cant go vertical. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Best pan/tilt head for my legs?
Thanks,
Jerry Kacey

    Jerry,

I use a nice set of Slik sticks and a Bogen 3063 head for much of what I shoot. It's a heavy setup, but extremely stable.

Your 70-200mm "L" lens is no problem if you have an f2.8 variety. You mount the camera and lens using the Tripod Mount Ring on the lens, and then loosen the ring to rotate camera and lens for portrait configuration.

The lenses without a tripod ring are a problem, but you can always mount another head, one with a 1/4" bottom mount, on top of the fluid head as needed. Another possibility is using a rotating bracket for the camera, ala the Custom Brackets QRS-35 or better or the Newton Camera Brackets Di400CR or some such.

Like Ziggy said, you can use the collar on the lens (there should be a
threaded knob on the side) and rotate the camera/lens using that.

Otherwise, nothing wrong with the video pod so no reason to swap it
    out.

    Welcome aboard!
