external storage for backup and consistant use

I have an 80GB harddrive on my notebook which is 75% full, 50% of which is photos. I want to get an external hard drive to keep at home to back up to and use the portable 80GB hard drive I have now as my use everyday drive for just the photographs. Any suggestions?
