Old Hobby, Old Pictures

I found this old CD I made many many years ago, some of the stuff on it is over 10 years old.

Came across some really old scanned images, of Wedding Cakes my mother and I used to do for people we knew ..... the files are really tiny, the images are pretty lousy too :rolleyes

I just decided one day that I thought I could do Cake Decorating and so I looked at a few pictures (I am sooooooo not a reader) and decided to have a go.

The cakes that are 3 Tier high are fruit cakes, first covered in Almond Icing, then covered in what is called Plastic Icing.

The flowers on the cakes other than the very first image are all hand made from Icing, they are my mothers handy work, and the extention work and lace is all hand made by me, these cakes used to take me many many hours to complete.

These images are pretty lousy but gosh what memories they hold :D
Enjoy....... Skippy

This was the first cake I ever tried to do, back then we didnt know how to make the hand made flowers, so we used silk ones, and I had not taught myself how to do the Extention Bridge work at this stage either.

CakeW2.jpg

The Centre piece of this Cake is an Open Card with Butterflies and flowers, the entire thing is made of ICING, yep even the butterflies are made of icing, the card too.. all done by hand (mums work)

See the outer ring of White Lace that stands up?
It is all hand made of icing too (my work)

CakeB1.jpg

This Cake was very plain and dainty, cant remember if this was a Wedding Cake or an Engagement :scratch

On the sides you can clearly see the extention work, it's like a bridge, it is off the cake like wires that hold a bridge, it's not easy to do and very time consuming, a row of hand made lace is above the extention (my work)

The tiny little flowers were made by my mother :D

CakeW3.jpg

This one I did for my Cousins Wedding, it's a 3 Tier.
The Cake has white icing, but peach coloured flowers, again all hand made.
Actually this was the very first 3 Tier Cake we ever did.
She wanted the works :D the Extention work, the Lace, everything :rolleyes

CakeW1.jpg

This is another 3 Tier Wedding Cake, the piece at the top was requested and supplied by the Bride.

The flowers are all hand made by my mother, and all the rest is my handy work

Amazing looking cakes Skippy- great work.
Have to admit I can't understand putting so much effort into something that is so temporary, but they do look almost too good to eat :)

The work is delicate, and very time consuming the lace is made off the cake, set, then each tiny piece is lifted off, and with a piping bag (tiny) each individual piece is iced back on on piece at a time.

    Thanks for looking...... Skippy :D

Hi Brian, these cakes are done in such a way that they actually last for months and months, the cake itself is preserved within the icing that covers it, many people take the top tier off and use it for their first Anniversary.

That's why I gave it up, they are way too time consuming ..... Skippy :D

I used to soak the fruit in Sherry for a week before I even began making the cake, these type of cakes last a long time Awais and store very well.

A lot of people dont like fruit cake, but most choose them because of the fact that they keep for so long :D

Thanks for looking Awais .......... Skippy

Hi David, gosh my mother went on to just get better and better at making hand made flowers, that she started teaching it at the Neighbourhood House.

Neither of us do it anymore, but my mother is very creative and she continues to make Jewelry, and does a lot of knitting and sewing.

She's in her mid 70's now, but rarely a day goes by that she is not making something, my father even makes her special knitting needles so that she can knit with cotton rather than wool.

Mum loves to make things that are tiny, she knits minature toys in cottons, so dad makes the needs for her because they need to be similar in thickness to a darning needle, to do it she has to knit using a magnifying glass on a stand with a light because the stitches are so tiny :D

    Thanks for looking David...... Skippy
