Does anyone know what a proof magazine is? I've heard the term and think it's a neat idea. Now were do I find such a creature?

Try Mpix.com I'm pretty sure they have what your looking for. They call em proof portfolios. Great btw :D

PS: They're E-surface paper is the same as luster. I've ordered identical prints from both places and while their is some slight, slight difference in color, vibrancy, etc... it's extremly smalll. Most times if there's any difference mpix is lightly better. No offence SM... you know I love you'll!

I have a few questions if you dont mind :D

Can you show me what some of the inside pages look like?
Do they allow you to design each page?
To order from them , what is exactly involved ?

It would be really nice if smugmug offered these.
    Thankyou

Proof books, rounded wallets, and styrene mounted prints are 3 things that SM doesn't offer & why I place a lot of orders elsewhere. If I have a basic order, I use SM, but to be honest most of my orders include one of the above.

I agree about the styrene mounted, metallic and also the paper quality. I find that WHCC has a slightly heavier weight paper than SM. And, of course, SM doesn't offer metallic, which I love. I've only used it for one of my personal prints, which is hanging on my living room wall right now, and I love, love, LOVE it. It's a large, 16x20, mounted, matted and framed image of this, Blackbirds in a Cottonwood Tree. This kind of image is just perfect for metallic:

SM, ya gotta get the quality and selections, or we will go elsewhere. I'm offering people the ability to buy from my site. But, for exhibits (which is what I mostly do, and where I do most of my sales right now) and personal stuff, I buy from WHCC. Sorry. It's a preference thing.

Gosh, I disagree. I think SM's lustre prints are actually nicer than WHCC (who is who I use for the other stuff that I mentioned).

    Pamela,

Looking back at this post I'd have to say that the "wow" has worn off of the proof magazine I have from Mpix.

Basically it is a stack of 8x10's with small images on each page along with the filename below each image. All of these are spiral bound with a clear plastic cover page.

There are no design features (at least when I ordered a year ago).

Since that time I've opted to no order proof magazines unless the client orders it and pays for it.

I don't have any images of my book at the moment but if you email me at photos@3rdplanetphotography.com I'll be happy to snap a few and send over to you.
