Featured Category instead of Gallery?

I shoot cheerleading competitions. As such, I create a category for each competition, and then have a ton of galleries in the category, one gallery for each team (each gym often fields at least 5 or 6 teams, so they add up).

I'd very-much like to feature the last 4 competitions by featuring whole CATEGORIES instead of galleries.

Any chance to do this?

Failing that, can I hide "featured galleries" (I know I can) and somehow hack my own "featured categories" block?

Any adult supervision would be very much appreciated.

If you are a Power User or Pro, then you can create a gallery redirect from a featured gallery to a category.
