Our Natioanl Football code here in Australia is Australian Rule Football sometines referred to as "Aerial Ping Pong". Very fast non stop action for 4 25 min quarters. No padding and full contact.
Here are some shots of my 6'7" 17 yo son who plays in the Ruck position. The Ruck is a jumper who goes after a centre bounce at the start of each quarter, after goals, sideline throw ins.
My son is the one with the red uniform.
All taken with Nikkor 200mm f2 in crop mode on a D2X.

I agree w/ waxy about the timing in the last shot. I guess your son's height can really play to his advantage
I also think the tighter crop helps bring the viewer in to the action better, and under normal circumstances would even suggest tighter, but it already looks like you're being limited by the range of your lens. When I shoot my son's soccer games, I'm using a 100-400 zoom and there are times when 400 isn't enough when they're on the far side of the field. not knowing the size of this pitch, I image that you are limited (200 is your longest lens, right?). Are you at least as close to the side lines as you can get?
While there are times when a wider shot puts things in perspective, the sports photog mantra (at least one of them) is to "shoot tight and crop tighter". You also want to try to get the ball in the shot if possible (i.e, try shooting in portrait orientation for the jump series).
looking forwards to seeing more,
C.

I can't but think if he works at his bball and bulks up some that there would be some universities here in the states drooling to give him a full ride-
I don't know how much they're aware of potential bballers in australia; you might have to open up their eyes-
USM more and crop alot more
