So sorry!!! I know how painful that can be. Boston Terriers are great little dogs, my favorite aunt had one when I was a kid (long ago!). Do your parents have any other pets? I hope so....it can be painfully quiet around the house when you lose one. My best to them!

Awww. So sorry to hear about Columbo's passing. We've had pets that have died and it is a devastating time emotionally. They are so much part of a family, aren't they?

He was my parents-in-law only pet... and it's sad too since all their kids (my husband and his two sisters) are all married and so now it's really going to be lonely without a pet around...

... his mom is a little hesitant to get a new pet because she doesn't like the idea of "replacing" Columbo.

But yeah he was a great dog :) Always looked like a puppy with his oversized feet and always energetic and loved to cuddle right next to you.

So sorry to hear of their loss. 7 is young for dogs but certainly more than long enough for him to become like family.

However, Let your parents-in-law know this. There may be a new pet out there that needs them. Tell them not to let that fear of the replacement feeling get in the way if that pet shows up somehow, somewhere. Their dog was not uncared for and it was not their decision to 'trade' him out for something else, if that makes sense. It just happened. They don't need to go actively looking but sometimes pets drop in your lap at the right time.

In explaination, my ultimate cat friend passed away just about a year ago of a rare heart condition at age 8. I have a second cat that needed a friend because I travel a lot so in the interest to fill her needs (and in a fit of grief) I was surfing all the pet rescue websites in the area looking for that right stripey face and I found him! I thout it would take a very long time to find another as special. I found a cat that needed me just as bad I think I needed him. It sounds really weird but Ollie was so sick but it was almost like he left when he did because that cat needed me and I needed to find him exactly when I did or I we wouldn't have met. I did feel guilty that I was trying to replace Ollie. That feeling didn't last long and I was able to give the new cat, Cecil, a nice home with the extra care he needed at first. He is grateful and sweet and follows me more than my rescued dog does. He wasn't a replacement, he was supposed to be here, I now know.

Yes it is. He had a heart murmer which was causing problems for a while... and the vet said something about his liver having shut down... shortly before he passed away (oh say 10-15 minutes) the vet had called my father-in-law and said that they were at the point where they needed to decide whether they were going to put Columbo down or put him into surgery... to which he said "let me discuss that with my wife" and then before they could decide the Vet called back to let them know that Columbo had decided for them :(

And yeah we're working on getting his mom to understand that it's not about "replacing" Columbo, but rather having a new companion, one which needs them. She's just very upset over the whole thing.
