I always get annoyed by this.

What do you guys choose to crop too? I do crop if I need a specific print size and know what it is but if I am just working on and image and going to put it up on smugmug for maybe downloading in a year what crop do you choose in ps? or do you just keep the same ratio as oiginally shot in?

I guess what Im wanting to know is what is my best fit option?

Is there a suggested layout that I can stick to that will ensure whatever crop ratio (within reason) is chosen It is still possible to choose that ratio and not crop the person in the image?

    Stu

USe the whole frame and as you compose LEAVE ROOM for 8x10 or 5x7 sizes.

    Zoom out, or step back.

    Thanks Andy,
Does anyone know if there is there a way to make say a transparent template to overlay in my images in PS that could show the different crops for this till I get used to it? Maybe create an action that shows it for anysize image?

You can make presets (8x10, 4x6, etc) for the Crop tool in Photoshop so all you have to do is choose a preset in the options bar and drag out the tool to see how it looks. Then press the Esc key to cancel out if you don't intend to actually apply the crop.

Read up on presets in the Photoshop help. I think it might ship with some common size presets.
