Negative/slide scanning

Can anyone reccomend an economical way to have a moderate number, (<1000) of 35mm slides and negatives scanned to digital images?

Any particularly reputable companies that I could mail my negatives to for scanning? I've found a few companies on google; it looks like they will charge me $.40-.50 per slide/negative frame.

This seems like a lot to pay - I've toyed with the idea of getting a decent quality general purpose scanner that has a 'slide/negative adapter' and just doing the scans myself. Are there any good tools/software that would make reapeated scanning faster? I.E. insert a negative in the scanner negative holder, push one button, have it scan all frames on the negative, repeat.

EDIT: As soon as I posted this I realized I should have seen this thread, oops. http://dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=45901

Yup. There are also several pretty recent threads with info about scanners if you decide to go the do-it-yourself route. Good luck!
