The pop out is very annoying on the picture being viewed. Can we get rid of it? If the cursor is near the picture it pops up. :rolleyes:rolleyes

I am not a big fan of the pop-up ether, and I think the save photo icon sucks in a way, it screams "Free photo!" to the person browsing if you forgot to protect your gallery, guess that'll make us more careful? I think I would have rathered need to tell them where it is, it's a little too oviouse.

I'm sorry, but this doesn't make sense to me. A feature should either be obvious and easy to use or you should properly configure your site so that the feauture isn't offered. It's not good for anyone to make a feature difficult to use just so most people don't find it.

If you don't want Save Photo to be offered on your pictures, then just change your galleries so originals are not enabled and the Save Photo button will disappear forever.

In case you're wondering, I offer most of my photos for download to family, friends and soccer parents and I'm extremely glad that it's a lot more obvious how to save the originals so my viewers are able to figure out how to do it much easier than before. On the few galleries, I don't want to share originals on, I just disable originals and the save photo button isn't offered. Works great.

I was not really trying to advocate changing it, just and observation really that it is a little too ovious when someone forgets to turn it off. Should make us more careful to get it turned off.

Truth be told, we agonized about the photobar for many months—at least I did.

We've been under a lot of pressure to provide it for the last year, but I told John Friend in email as recently as 3 months ago I didn't think it would work. I was afraid some people wouldn't know to hover over the image to find it. But what we've learned is people do discover it, then wonder if others will. And yet, almost everyone seems to.

This seems to be a case of not being able to please everyone. However, it looks very much like the majority prefer the cleaner look the flyover provides and don't miss the nest of links it replaces.

I wish we had a way to please everyone on this issue, because I can see both sides, but we haven't figured out how. I will say that the people who love photobar really love it.

What about a simple enhancement to make it pop up next to the picture (not over the top of the picture) if there is room in the window. The beauty of doing all this by JavaScript is that you can examine the current window to see if there is room. If there isn't room, then let it be over the top of the photo like it is now. If there is room, then pop it up right next to the photo. Is there any downside to this? Wouldn't this partly address some people's concerns?

Now that is a dang good idea for them to work on. Good thinking, not that it'll work exactly as that but if they can find a way to get it totally or partly off the photo that would be cool I think.

This is already doable now for power and pro customers, just so you know. On the bottom, with a js variable, or on the left, over the thumbs, with a js hack (posted in customizing forum). No reason it couldn't be modded to go on the right.

BWG is taking all this in and I expect that he *might* have more options, we don't know yet though.

Already can do with one line of JS in your customizing, James:

Looks really great on your site - I have to say I really strongly dislike it on top of the photos - it would be sooooooo much better if it worked like it does on your site for all of us

and, well, I am a customizing moron so maybe this will push me to pay someone to fix the whole dang thing for me!

U can do it Ann thumb.gifthumb.gif And after you do, you can tell me how lol3.gif Just kidding.

I like the idea of the flyover popping off to the right. wings.gif I am really impressed with the flyover. But I've never been a fan of menus that block the viewing of images.

I don't think it's quite there with the JS customization options today. I don't want it on the left because that obscures thumbs. I don't want it on the bottom because that might be off the screen and it obscures the caption. I like it being to the right (where nothing else is located), but I want it off the photo only if there is room on the screen. If there's not room on the screen to the right, then I don't want it off the edge of the screen so I'm OK with it being over the right edge of the photo. But if there is room, it's a soooo much better place to put it in that empty space than over the photo.

And, I don't think you should have to have power or pro to get it off your photos when there's room.

The bottom implementation should be similarly scripted. If there's room on screen, put it below the image. If not, put it on the screen.

IMO, one thing that would please most people would be the ability to have the photobar visible at all times with no hover required.

Ideally, there should be an option in the gallery to have the floating one, or a fixed one that shows at the bottom of the photos. It should be sized to match the width of the large photos, or make it tansparent with no border, so that the background color shows through.

    I don't like it.

    It covers up my photos.

It's not intuitive to new users. (I share photos with others in my field all the time, and I get emails from them asking how they're supposed to download it?)

Any way to get the option of using the photobar, or just having the choices shown below the main photo like it used to be? SAVE PHOTO was nice.

    Thanks for listening...

I to would like to have the option of placing the photobar to the right of the image. But being a standard user I am feeling hard done by s there is no option yet availble to me to do this. It's alright for smugmug to push the photobar on it's customers but letting only those with the pro and power be able to move it around is unfair to the rest of us. Please smugmug give us users the option of where to place it, as an option on the customise menus!!!!!

    Andy,

    My site is http://storksb.smugmug.com

I want to be able to make decisions on photobar placement on a per gallery basis, is this likely to be enabled from the customisation menu?

Hi, Thanks. Right now, there are no options re: the photobar for Standard accounts. But this could change, I don't really know.

Power and Pro accounts can move, hide, etc.

Wish I had a better answer for you right now.

Could you please pass this on to the powers that be, if it is available as a customisation for power and pro surely it should be possible to accomplish this in a menu for Standard users. I'm certainly not going to upgrade just so I can move the photobar around, especially as it will double my yearly fee, i presume. If the upgrade was cheaper then I might consider it.

Interesting idea. One question I have is how effective placing it on the right side will be as we come out with XL and XXL image sizes and the browser automatically fills the available space when it sees it has more room. It's an extension of what we do with smugmug small and smugmug styles now when you resize your browser. I think you're seeing space on the right because we don't have an XL size yet, but wouldn't you rather step up to a larger size image and nuke that extra space if there's room?

    photobar feedback
    Hi y'all,

there has been a lot of feedback on the photobar, some people love it, some people hate it.
Sorry to mention the competition here, but it doesn t seem like there is as much feelings expressed regarding the zenfolio photobar.
I was thinking maybe there is something good to take away from their site.

I myself like the concept of the photobar, but I am also a little 'annoyed' having it take so much space on top of the picture.
I am a standard user so no customization for me.
The idea of having it popping up outside the pic is not bad.

But I was also thinking that a redesign of the bar to make it considerably smaller (while maybe changing the display style to have our pics larger) will make the photobar less distracting.

    Thanks
