At first glance I too agreed. However looking at it for a while it really starts to bother me a little. I am not sure why but here are some of the things I see.
Focus- The only part that seems to be in focus is the rt side of the face. Beard, ear, and hair on his rt are great. However starting at the nose his/your rt side top half is severly blown out. Nose, forehead, and hair lighting is so harsh there is no detail left. It also bothers me that you can make out Canon but that is it- everything around it is pitch black. The hand that is in close relation to the face is also blown out and out of focus.
There is also a pretty harsh line above the arm and hand that really stands out against the dark neck and detail of the beard.
Hope it doesn't sound to harsh.

Photography to me is all about the 'in your face' factor. You know...the first thought you get when you look at a shot & this has that 'holy crap' seriousness about it
photo was taken at a restroom mirror with the regular light for lighting-
20d, 24-105mm lens, iso 1600-
and with the black dog present-

I appreciate your critique-
I never mind criticism as long as there is some element of it being constructive; it's very tiresome to get snide comments that have no purpose except to bring you down-
thankfully, there are very few jerks on this forum that do that, but sometimes I do attract them-
of course, 'art is subjective', but there are also elements of technique that are fairly objective-
this photo definitely is somewhat technically deficient-
my main purpose was to represent a mood, or emotion-
I am not experienced enough to produce what I wanted, 'mood-wise', and yet have a photo without blown highlights or shadows without details-
I see the eyes and the hand, and they capture my attention. I knew immediately what the black dog was just glancing at the photograph.
Keep up the good work.
If you want to find bad stuff, you can find it in any picture. There is a little bit of blown out stuff, but if previous poster had not mentioned it I would not have seen it myself as I focussed on the eyes and the hand.
If you wanted to show us moody, grey and dark, you succeeded! Well done

But having lived in a cave for the last 5 years...what does the black dog reference mean?

This is a fabulous image. I wouldn't do anything to it. It captures the mood which is difficult to put into a vernacular. Excellent work.

dave-
I first read of black dog as what winston churchill called his depression-
no offense to black dogs (we have one), but I think it is an apt description-

Or leave it in there, blow it up, and sell it to Canon for PR!!!
thank you, david-
I can see that face selling thousands of more canons-
kinda' like the toothless guy selling epsons-
Keep up the good work.
