Cheese was a hard one, especially for me as my family has cut way down on cheese for various reasons, mainly for aging arteries :-)
I had a couple of ideas, but not enough to go out and buy cheese I wouldn't wind up using or eating.
So I congratulate everyone who entered -- and the 10 finalists.
I was watching the voting and it was indeed close!
Congratulations LiquidAir!

Second time, eh :-)
Very nice shot!
It was nice to make the final cut though.... It means I'm improving!
That pic is one cut above.

I had a lot of fun taking cheese pictures. Most of my photography leans more in the direction of found images, i.e. capturing what I see. This was a major stretch for me into the world of constructed images. The thinking is very different; instead of "look at that great light, I'll take a picture" it is "where do I put the light to get the look I want?" Over the last several months I have been trying to take more control over all of my photography. This challenge was great opportunity for me to push my skills and I learned a great deal from the process.
While I am on my little soap box, some credits:
I am an avid reader of the Strobist blog. The spotlight I used for the main light for Cheesy Horror was a home made spot grid on my 580EX based on a design documented in one of the Strobist posts. On a side note, David Hobby has some snide comments about modeling lights on the Strobist blog, but they sure would have come in handy trying to get that shadow in the right place. If I was doing a lot of shots like this one, I'd look long and hard at a real set of studio strobes.
One of my current online photo heroes is Wylie Maercklein. Following his Flicker photo stream (check out The Long Goodbye) is changing the way I think about light and framing and his cinematic style was one of the inspirations for my Noir approach to the subject Cheese.
Finally, to my wife who tolerated me taking over the kitchen table for two successive evenings and who looked in the LCD on my camera at one point and told me to "simplify."
It's a nice photo !
