I'm shooting a D50 (and 6006 film camera) with an 80-200 f2.8 and also an AF-S 18-70 (the kit lens for the D70). Most of the shooting with the teleconverter will be done outside, but there may be the occassion when I shoot indoors with the 80-200 for my daughters dance performance (no flash), so I'm thinking of sticking to the 1.4 to protect my f stop as much as possible. Any suggestions?

I went with the 1.4 myself and am pretty happy with it, while any tele-converter is going to cause some losses, both light and degridation of image with the extra glass, it has been a passable solution for getting a bit more length out of my two zooms, though I've used it mostly with the 70/300 once I got that, I haven't used it much with the 90mm fixed macro lens since I got that one for close work or when I wanted avoid the zoom lens and get a bit more sharpness.
