Keywording works

I have alluded to this before in other threads but I have been waiting on the official publication to go live.

A few months ago I was contacted by the editor of the Cherokee Preservation Foundation Grant Making Guide. She was looking for a cover photo for the 2007 guide. They apparently found one of my "Valley of Fire" photos using keywords (in this case "petroglyphs") picked up by Google. We worked out a price and photo credit. The editor was able to download the original photo using the "digital downloads" feature that at the time was only a few days old. The transaction went flawlessly.

The photo is here: http://www.docwalkersphotography.com/gallery/1832886#91469180

The grantmaking guide is here:

I want to say thinks to Smugmug for making this happen. If it was not for the keyword functionality and the "new" digital download capability I would have missed out on this opportunity.

    Doc

That's great! I'm glad to hear from photographers making money. I like money... :+)

I googled "petroglyphs" and "petroglyphs photo" and couldn't find your photo / page. Do you know what the search actually was? What words did they use for the search? I'd be curious to know.

    Thanks

I am not sure what the search combination was. The editor mentioned the search when we spoke. I know that my google ranking has dropped due to the lack of changes to my site. I have not had regular internet access so my site maintenance has been lacking. Keep in mind that this took place several months ago.

Nice. Is there some way to 'batch' keyword photos on smugmug, or you just keyword a few photos in each gallery? The thought of keywording hundreds of photos..... bleh.

You can batch keywords and captions on a gallery by gallery basis. Also keywords that are stored in the exif info are parsed by smugmug. I do both. If I am working on the photo in Lightroom or one of the other photo packages I use, I create keywords and store them in the photo exif. Other times I upload the photo and then use the bulk keyword tool to caption and keyword the photo.
