New glass ideas...

Hey folks!

I have a D50 with the kit 18-55 and a Nikon 50mm/1.8. I really enjoy shooting in available light without a flash (although we do have an sb600), and am into candid people shots (admittedly, the 50mm is not very discrete, since you really can't "sneak up" on folks with a fixed lens, but i like the large aperture and light in this lens). My hubby, on the other hand, enjoys trekking with our camera, and likes landscape stuff.

We're ready to really invest in our first piece of serious glass, but can really only budget one new lens right now. Does anyone have some advice on what to get that would please both our shooting styles (or is that possible?)

Thanks for your time and input!
Brige

the 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G VR by nikon might not be a bad choice. it'll give you the length to get those candids, and give your husband the width to shoot landscapes. if you need more light, pop on the 50mm f1.8, but the VR will help you shoot at a lower shutter speed as long as your subject remains still.

if you want to drop about 1600 bucks, you can pick up the 70-200 f2.8 VR, but it's a fairly large and heavy lens. its hard to beat the sharpness though.
    i really <3 mine.

The NYT technical writer, David Pogue, wrote a raving fan column about the Nikon 18-200 VR.

He's not a professional photographer, but he sure did enjoy the lens. And you can't complain about the range. 18-200? Holy cow!

    Thanks Gp and Wx!

My buddy has the 18-200vr... maybe it was the light conditions, but i found it rather "soft" at the 200 end. I tried it out indoors with limited light. but, you can't beat the price, that's for sure!! Sounds like it is about the best option! Thanks for the input!!

I've been drooling over the 70-200 f2.8 for sure!! But, certainly a little out of our league, or atleast what my hubby will let me spend on glass ;-)...

    Thanks gang!
