First Digital Post

I've had my office covered with
4x6 photos stitched together for
the last few years. I recently sold
my BMW motorcycle that was distracting
me from my art! Well I took cell phone pix.
Now that I don't have upkeep on that mule
I bought a digital camera. Wow. I'm like a
kid in a candy store. Even the pouring rain
hasn't stopped me from pressing buttons
and playing with all this amazing new software.

Welcome to DGrin!!! I'm sure you will enjoy yourself here, you are among some of the most friendly and knowledgable people about photography I have ever met. If you have any questions feel free to ask!

Great picture, btw!! What software did you use to do the stitching?

Hey there and welcome to the Forum thumb.gif

Glad your having a ball with your new software, you've almost got your stitching right, I can see at least two joins in this shot, but Im sure you'll figure it out the more you use it.

You did better than me, I am not good at stitching at all, using a tripod is the way to go for those type of shots.

Thanks for sharing your joy........ have fun on the forum, and keep posting.

I think it was the EOS utility. It was one of the three canned software programs that came with the camera.

I usually work pretty sloppy on these panoramaa. I like the edges even rougher, a mix of Cartier Bresson and David Hockney style montage.
I've never used a tripod, I shoot from the hip or while moving.

I'm amazed the software took care of most of the stitching, but clean stitches aren't as important as the feel of a cafe table in the rain!

    thanks for the warm welcomerolleyes1.gif

Great work, you almost fooled me with stiches. How does it work anyway? I would like to learn.

You know it's the darndest thing. It's almost all automatic.I quickly took some pictures while shooting from left to right. I tried to make sure there was some overlap, but I do a sloppy job.
    img0030jy7.jpg img0031mm8.jpg img0032je2.jpg

I opened the Zoom Ex Browser (Canon provided this with purchase of the camera)

    1. Under tools I chose 'stitch photos...'
I selected the 7 or 8 photos. It the asked me to put them in order, so I moved the correct one to the beginning in a menu.

    2. Then select 'merge' and hit 'start.

    3. Then select 'save'.

In about half a second this appeared in a cropped window:
    00000teststitchbd9.jpg
    I uncropped it for display.
It took about 5 seconds to save it. I then had to shrink even the big one up above for display in here.. It took much longer to shrink it than it did to create it!

I thought turning to shoot into the sun would be a good test but even these three images
have alot of variation in exposure: the two lighter trees in the background, the car in the foreground, the car moving in the first picture that's already passed in the second exposure etc.

I am just amazed that it made all the choices and smoothed the color balance, exposure, seams, and information.

Great shot... but what happened to the far right of the shot?
There is a very visible color shift.

Interesting that the BMW did not accellerate your photography passion. I just purchased my first dSLR (D50), and can not wait to take it on another motorcycle trip. I guess it's all in what you really enjoy.

Since I paid anywhere from $1000 to $1500 every 6,000 miles of riding, I simply coundn't afford to spend anything on photography. Especially after I
vibrated a lense to an early death on my Elan 7. I did take a bunch of pics with
    my cell phone...

So now free from future BMW extravagant bills, I can afford to go digital!

Maybe I'll get a KLR with all the money I save up!wings.gif

A little more my rough style! It would be ok with me if all the stitches showed!
