I noticed an Interesting article on phase-change memory in a mag this week.

The short non-technical highlights:
  • Writes up to 500 times faster than flash
  • Writes use half the power of flash
  • Uses less space than flash (i.e. more memory can be packed into chip or card of the same size)

There are three things I'm waiting to see:
  1. If and when this stuff makes it to market
  2. If and when it will be price competitive with flash
  3. Will it be possible to build things like CF cards based on phase change memory that will be backward compatible with older hardware

Price is always related to fabrication costs. New technology means new fabrication and that means huge initial costs to make the product. Then you have to factor in who owns the technology and what price they will they license it out for. So it will be awhile before we see this competively priced and replacing flash emory. Look at how long LCDs were around before the fabrication process was perfected and thye dropped drasticly in price.
