then the next day you are the lunch

While taking these shots I also solved an earlier mystery. You might remember this thread where some folks thought a different Caracara had been shot because of the tags and radio transmitter. Anyhow these shots are from the caracara's left side where he was front lit. I initially took some shots from the other (right) side where he was backlit before I moved around to the better light. Anyway here's a shot of the same caracara from the other side

You see there's this caracara on the side of the road eating a duck. I take some pics and he doesn't fly away, he's just stands there eating. You can see the wires and tags from one side and not the other. So all I'm saying is that the hardware is visible from one side and not the other.

Its the same caracara in all the pictures.

    Hey Skippy,

More than likely the duck died of natural causes or some other predator killed it. Caracaras eat mostly carrion. The only live thing I've seen them go for was a turtle.

Gotta be honest with ya Harry I love the mallard hen. They are my favorite ducks even more than Mallard drakes or wood ducks. The rest of it broke my heart even if that Caracara didn't directly kill the duck.

Quality, as usual, is superb wings.gif

BTW I think Angelo is pulling your leg. He might have a wierd sense of humormwink.gifmwink.gif

Nature ain't kind. When the black-bellied whistling ducks have their young I try to document their growth. I follow in dismay as the number of ducklings decrease with each visit as they fall prey to various predators. However that's the reason they have so many young at a time, so that a few eventually survive.

Angelo's sense of humor is just fine, Angelo is just a very weird person. He comes from California you know.

Harry, Your new Challenge is to get a shot of the Caracara from the front So that the leg bands ( that usually go all the way around a leg ) can be seen half visable and half In visible :Drolleyes1.gif

Also to further my cause. ( not to cause you grief) check out the back wire on the last photo with the "jewelery" It runs down his back. In the previous shot you can see his whole back and that wire should be visible......NO??????.

Yeah, I know. I go through the same thing here with Canada Geese and their gosslings. Sweetest little things. The mother geese will sometimes let you hold a bunch of them right after they hatch and before they've had time to imprint. But once you give them beck to Mom they imprint soon after and then you can't get near them. Here it's mostly big Pike and turtles that get them.

What can I tell ya. I'm at a disadvantage because I was there and can only report what I saw. I only saw one caracara eating a duck, because the caracara was eating said duck he wasn't going anywhere. He kept eating the duck and I kept taking pictures. He didn't leave until he was satisfied and when he left I stopped taking pcitures.
