Stonehenge behind the scenes...

This may not be news to you Brits out there, but I was pleased to find out today that if you've got an extra £12 and a good alarm clock, you can get some groggy pics of Wiltshire's most touristy rock formation sans tourists. Actually they're open for sunset shots too.

So I've got myself the paperwork that would allow me to reserve a spot for up to 26 photographers on a given date. So is anyone interested? I figure we can get there crazy early to catch the sunrise then after we get our alloted 1 hour, we can head off to somewhere else like Avebury or ... well I don't really know the area that well so suggestions would be cool.

I hear you Brits like to go to pubs so I'm sure we could work in a pub at the end of the day assuming we can find one. :lol3

So, you're saying it's not like Delicate Arch thingie:mwink.gif

I guess only one problem to resolve would be to decide who's shooting first light on the stones (from East shooting West) VS who's shooting the silhouette and the "star" (from West shooting East). deal.gif

No, it's not quite like delicate arch. It's worse:

Please excuse the horrible terrible-ness of this shot, it wasn't supposed to be for public consumption. C&C not requested deal.gif

The crowds were like this the whole way around even just today (my bro-in-law, William, and I went again today), a Wednesday in the early afternoon.

    Mike:

You didn't need to go all the way to the UK for Stonehedge-- there's that replica in your old homestate of Washington-- just outside of Maryhill in the Columbia River gorge! Doesn't look nearly as crowded as the real thing for some reason...

Hehe, or you can see the basically abandonded FOAMHENGE in Natural Bridge, Virginia. A true replica.

Here's the info on it. :):

    I wonder
If the "crowd control" technique would work here (very dark ND, f/22 or more), to get you several minutes of exposure. Maybe the darn crowd would move? ne_nau.gifheadscratch.gif

I'll dig up and post some shots from it. It's actually a pretty cool place.

Edit: Threadjacking duly noted :D. Stonehenge - WA now has its own thread. My apologies. bowdown.gif

I'm not :D . I'm definitely interested. When did you have in mind?. Its quite a long drive for me, about 3-4 hours from London, so it would probably be a weekend jaunt.

I didn't have an exact date in mind yet. I'm actually hoping to be as close to the longest day of the year as possible. But I'd like to get max participation so if that doesn't work for everyone, then I'm flexible.

I was around there on the 30 dec but not on a Stonehenge mission. We arrived just after sun rise and the place was empty. Mid summer day gets a bit busy with people interested in the power of the stones and all that. Any day with a good sunrise is good but that is not easy to plan for in the UK. If I am free I would be interested.

Of course what they all forget or don't know is that Stonehenge has lost its power & its actually Avebury (nearby) that is still active. :D I know, I felt the power as I drove past it once and had to make an immediate detour to investigate.

Actually, good point. I'm thinking that stonehenge would be the start of the day followed by maybe woodhenge rolleyes1.gif and then Avebury and whatever else.
