I knew, of course, that trees and plants had roots, stems, bark, branches and foliage that reached up toward the light. But I was coming to realize that the real magician was light itself.

I agree. Love #1. #3 is great, as well is #4. #2 is good, and a nice portrait, but (and for some reason I can tell) the stick is in focus, his face, not, and that bugs me...
Do you have any techs on this? Like time of day, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, flash/ev comp, meter mode, etc? The exposure balance is wonderful and I would like to experiment with the same technique...

I actually did these a lot different. We experimented with really weird settings to get what I did.
Here is the EXIF for the shots posted here.
ISO: 100
Shutter Speed: 1/1250 sec.
Exposure Time: 1/1250
I used the Sigma 10-20mm wide angle lens for the shots.
And for existing light, I tried to backlight it so it wouldn't drown out the sky or the subject.
I had my Canon 430EX Speedlight set on the 50mm zoom length.
Does that help anybody?

Yes, actually. I didn't think to ask about the flash zoom setting... I was wondering how you got the sudo vignetting, its a very cool effect, particularly in photo 1.
Unfortunately, I am using a Maxxum 5D (yes, some are shot on a 20D... school's camera...) and while I am planning on backing out of the now Sony camp, I am not about to buy a flash that I will have to lose money on when I go Nikon (KM has a proprietary hot-shoe mount).
But I will file this little bit of brilliance away for a later date... Thank you.
