    It seems to me that this whole debate could be sumarized quite succinctly:

    A 10MP camera could have better image quality than a 3MP camera however the MP count does not guarantee better quality. The best 3MP camera is better than the worst 10MP camera. If you never print larger than 5x7 there exists a 3MP camera that will give you acceptable quality for most subjects. If you are making gallery quality 16x20 prints, you will likely find that even the best 3MP camera is lacking in the details. There is no substitute for testing a full camera system to determine what is acceptable for your applicaion.

    There is no doubt that the industry, particularly at the consumer end, has overemphasized pixel count, in some cases to the detriment of image quality. With noise level and high ISO performance being the headline story about the new 1DmIII sensor those winds may be changing. Hopefully over time that bold statement will pull the whole industry in a new direction with the emphasis more on image quality than pixel count.
