Do you know any photo books about any [american] prision?
More specifically portraits of inmates while living behind bars?

Cheers!

    Planning to move ;-)

Not sure about the photo books, but a while back was looking for some other info... & was stunned at how many internet forums there are related to prisions.
    I take lots of pictures--sometimes I make a photograph.

    Thanks,

I had found a book on prisioner tatoos. I'm trying to find out what is necessary to get an authorization to shoot prisioners (with their consent of course). I have a friend working jail for the sheriff's office that's going to help me in that question.

I'm sorry but we are a kinder, gentler nation these days. They do not let you "shoot" prisoners:D . We inject them and put them to sleep:ivar .

Seriously though, are you speaking of jails, prisons, or both. I assume you have to get the Sheriff's permission for jails or the Warden's permission for prisons which I don't assume will be very easy due to the privacy rights. Never hurts to ask though. I guess it would also depend on what you want to do with them. They let the media in at time to do stories so anything is possible.

I've not photographed inside a prison or jail, but did do a shoot inside a juvie detention facility last year. The facility was hosting an event about kids turning their lives around so they pre-screened the juvies and even got parents/guardians to sign releases in advance for photo/video/audio use!

Even so, I still made sure everyone I photographed was okay with it before photographing them. Here's one image I liked-- the girl is reading from a book about what it was like for others when they were her age (the book was was part of the event):

'Course adult facilities are a lot more stringent. Without a description, you might think this shot was in a college dorm! The guards even helped us set it up. The lesson is, jail/prison officials are usually very helpful if you show things in a positive light. But they might not have been so helpful if this girl was in handcuffs and crying and struggling with a guard.

Yes I hear that. A friend of mine is a sheriff's deputy at the jail, and he'll try to get his boss consent for the photos. He's very cool with the idea, as long as I don't portrait the deputys as the bad guys.
