Snapper Rocks is just an hour from me. A great local surf spot.
I got there yesterday morning just before dawn & set up on some rocks...air temp was about 22c (72f) & the water was warm.
Lot of local surfers & some pro's out on the waves early before the comp started...man does that 5.6 aperture suck in the early morning !!! Talk about frustrating !!
Kelly Slater...if you ever wanted to know why he is a world champion. Man it was like watching an F1 car on water !!
Man could these blokes destroy a wave !!
My 2 spots
You name them.....looked like the entire surfing world was there. Great to be at an event where anyone was allowed to photograph.
More surfing paparazzi turned up than i knew existed in Australia !!!
The punters
Wow Gus these are excellent great conditions for your shoot too, ya lucky buggar...... I got up early to go shoot the bike race but it was so over cast at 7.30am and still not light properly I ended up having to shoot at ISO 1600 which absolutely sucked, so I was pretty disappointed.
Was you using your 400mm ? your shots are sharp as a tack
I bet your thrilled to bits with this lot, congratulations Gus .... Skippy

Great shots Gus, must say the weather was a little warm during my visit over the weekend..:D I was going to try and get down there on Saturday but my ride failed to turn up in time (note to self- next time hire a car).

Snap. Raw has it's place but if you keep an eye on the exposure jpegs are a lot faster to process.

I too really like the Kelly Slater shots, particularly this one -
But what's this guy up to? Is he asking Kelly to smile, or throw a wink to his camera?
Looks like you had a lot of fun. I can't imagine the pros got much better shots than you did. Nice shooting.
BTW, lots of Canon glass on that beach, eh?
