Went back for some morning workout shots. Santa Anita is an old racetrack where Seabiscuit was filmed in Arcadia, CA.

I like the second to the last sepia/bw KIND OF FROM BEHIND, WERE YOU PURPOSFULLY GOING FOR THE SLOW SHUTTER SPEED ? , I often play with solw mo effects, it worked in some , others i would have prefereed more sharp and static.

yea, I was panning most of the shots that day with shutter speeds of 1/30-1/45 sec at around 500mm or so.

I rarely find frozen shots of running horses interesting, so I pann almost all of my horse shots.

    Wow, these are excellent!

I love the way you capture motion, and the atmosphere in your images.

    All three B&Ws are terrific!

    Hey thanks.
Regarding the 5th shot. They practice in the early morning, just after the sun rises, so the horse is riding into the sunrise.

This horse was really flying so I saw it going toward the sun and I got a sense of something like a spaceship doing warp speed into the sun, so I processed it to look like it.

    One of my fav's too.

    Thanks for noticing.

    Thanks,
I use Canon's supplied RAW converter (DPP), I converted to monotone, then selected one of the color filter effect, then I add a touch of red and reduce blue to warm up the b/w to make it a tritone. I find a straight convertion to b/w very cold in appearance.

    Ha ha ha,
Yea panning is a true art, the factors that increase/decrease the streaking are distance of the subject from you, speed of the subject, trojectory of the subject, focal length, and shutter speed.

It's easy to sit and calculate the possiblities but when your there, it's mainly trained instincts.

Remember, 500 with a crop factor of 1.6 is more like 800mm's.
    (I know, I know, it's not 800mm, more like FOV of 800mm)
