The Whipping Post Devalued?

Hi,

I've been a registered user of this forum for less than a year, it's a great resource and I've learnt a great deal in that short time.

However is it just me or has the Whipping Post become seriously devalued in recent months by the increased posting of what are essentially amateur snapshots?

I should point out that I'm no professional, but I like to think I know the difference between a snapshot and decent photograph.

I realise this is a contentious issue but the rules of the Whipping Post are there for all to read, it's reserved for your best work.

No doubt I'm opening a can of worms here but I for one rarely bother with the Whipping Post anymore, better images are to be found elsewhere on the forum.

Charlie

I have always felt that we have more to learn from shots that don't work. The idea behind the "Whipping Post" is to give more serious feedback and critque on a poster's shot.

It's not the quality of the pics that counts in the WP but the quality of the feedback.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

OK, I seem to have got myself confused, it's all about 'your' best work, so if your best work is an over exposed, out of focus image of a group of people with their heads out of frame, by all means post it, if it's 'your best' work.

Yep. But the value here, is that, if a sup-par photo (technically, artistically) is posted, then the whip should focus on that, and encourage the poster to understand why the photo is not a good one - then he/she can strive for something better to be whipped :D
