It was a gorgeous day yesterday, about +4C by mid afternoon. We walked the dog in the late afternoon (3:30 or 4 til 5:30), and I got some photos along the way.
This is my fav too. And the really cool thing about this shot is that I was very purposeful in what I wanted it to look like - by this I mean that not only did I know what composition I wanted (and needed to get knee deep in snow to achieve) but I knew what color range I wanted to capture too. I was able to do that and not have to do very much pp afterward - given the light (lack of, and flat) I am pretty proud of it!

I think this is a case where the lack of light worked in your favor, or you took advantage of it well, I should say. The pastel colors are a big part of what works in that image.
No, I don't carry the tripod (or monopod) on our walks - I get far enough behind when I stop for a shot or two - then I have to run to catch up with dh and dog:D
Used the 17 - 85mm lens - it has IS.
Snow has a wonderful reflective value too.
I just played with shutter, apeture and ISO til I saw what I wanted. Couldn't risk any slower shutter, though. (oh, and hold your breath while you press the shutter release).
And finally, in post I adjusted the highlight, midtone, shadows - so that you could make out the fence better.
(btw, the clock on my 20d is not correct)

Yes, you are right.
(I am just pleased that the fence and snow are distinguished from each other.)
Thanks, David.
wonderful shots. the fence should be framed and on your wall. Great job. Now I have to go for a walk.
peace.

Hi johno
I never really think about framing winter shots - but I am starting to get a big collection of them - I am also thinking of using an old wooden window frame as a photo frame for them.
That came out really well. Worth getting knees in the snow for.
Thanks, Dee. Every once in a while, snow in the top of your boots is worth it!
Of course, those occassions are more frequent for my 10 yr old than for me!)

Anne,
It looks like you are simpatico with your new home/surrounding.
I like the fence and the trophy trees.
Mel
PS. Just wondering, have you tried some where the snow is white even though the light is blue?
