I'd go with either an HP or a Compaq. Sony is nice, but getting parts is a major headache. Same with Toshiba. Dell makes great desktops but absolutely lousy laptops. If you're the risk-taking type, go with Gateway. Thinkpads/Lenovos are also a good buy, but some of the new models are flimsier than they used to be.

I have an HP Pavilion dv9000 and I LOVE looking at pictures on the 17" HD monitior. It also has a full number pad, wifi card, media reader, tons of USB ports, a firewire port, and plenty of other extras. From a tech stand point it also has Core 2 Duo processor, Altec Lansing speakers and a built in 1.3 MP webcam.

I've had expirences with ANCIENT AT&T laptops (windows 3.0), toshiba's, and now this HP. I love it. :)

Good info. Why "risk-taking type...Gateway" laptops? Also Gatway desktops?

Gateway products sucks. As an industry pro for many years I can say this with authority.

Toshiba laptops are second to only Panosonic Toughbooks.

I buy only Toshiba or Apple laptops. I have about 10 toshiba laptops in my care now and never any problems.

Based completely on anecdotal evidence, VAIO hard drives are notorious for failing at the three year mark. I've had this happen to quite a few friends. And like somebody else said, getting replacement items/accessories can be hard (not to mention extremely expensive).

That said, I have had a VAIO for longer than that that seems to have lasted the test of time.

At work, I use a Dell laptop which is pretty dependable and durable (it's been knocked around a couple of times). From what I've seen, at least the Latitude line is dependable (coworker managed to spill a cup of water on hers, but it managed to live).

I guess a question is, what are you looking for in a laptop? If I were to get into the market, these would be the things I would look for, in order of personal preference: Portability (<4 lbs), dependability, battery life, and finally performance. As I don't have to do much heavy lifting in terms of processing power on the road, I'd rather do light stuff on the laptop, and leave the hard stuff for my desktop at home.
