I think if you make all the galleries under the cat private the category will not
show without a direct link.

ok i did that and the category is still showing up on my homepage. My site is @ shutterheadphoto.smugmug.com. And what I need to do is have "family" hidden from my homepage but still be able to have my family see it and the galleries inside of it. Any ideas?

In this case I think you need the hide category hack. Look in the hacks
section of the support forum for it.
