Nice Shots
Hey! I think that these are great shots that were captured very well! Interesting subject matter as well! I really like the one of the lady holding up the pot that she is washing - that one makes me chuckle for some reason.

The expression on the face of the worker in the last one is good as well - she kind of has that "I got stuck cutting the meat again today" kind of look!

Today, I'll go and try again because - for me - these shots are not sharp enought.
The woman who is cutting the meat is a very kind one. I am sure - not going to ask - that she is bored with that work but she has to do it...

- Antonio, none of the "cookers" (we call those that cook 'chefs') look pleased that you are taking their picture. The last one looks as if your camera is nexted to be sliced. What were these for? Did you design this kitchen? Did you use a flash?

Hello Gary !
How do you do ?
These cookers - we call them cookers and not chefs as this is for masters in cooking food - or, these women to be more generic, are indeed very pleased to be photographed.
They are rarelly photographed. Photography - in spite of its spread because of digital - is not at their reach. Not that they can't afford it but because they are too busy to think of it.
Or to know about it and be interested.

Let me put things at extremes as I like to do:
Why greek philosophers dedicated themselves to this discipline ? Because they could afford it, because there was some people for the minor works.

The same thought can be applied to the diamond diggers in Brazil, Serra Pelada.
Will they ever think of photography ?
Do they ever read a paper ?

The woman in my last picture is a very good woman (in the sense of goodness, kindness...) and I shot 4/5 pictures to get this one.
She looks at the job as something she must do to survive.

The photos don't serve any purpose at all.
They are shot under a theme: work.

Don't compare with the huge work of Sebastiao Salgado

Antonio, what Gary's trying to tell you is that in english we don't say "cooker", we say "chef". A cooker would be an appliance, not a person. Thanks for sharing these rare shots!

This little mis-entrepretations happen and they are curious.
Nikolai the other day asked for an assignment about Hollidays.
Holidays in Europe are days we don't work, like the Portuguese version of the 24th July, for example.
Nikolai was refering to Christmas !

OK then they are all chefs !

One thing I forgot to tell Gary is that I used flash on ETTL mode, slow shutter (what for ?) and at 2/3 of the power.
I think I did a good work under the circunstances and to my knowledge.

Holidays has the same meaning here, but when you say "The Holidays" or, "The Holiday Season" it refers to the time around Thanksgiving and Christmas, here in the US. Yeah, these little subtleties are interesting!

Antonio, sorry to keep harping on the language thing, but instead of chefs you could call them "cooks". I didn't think of that first time around. Chefs or cooks.

This is normal ...
Rememeber that this is where the food for some 30 people comes from everyday, all year around ...
I suppose - and I hope - that most of the kitchens in Portugal look like this.

No problem, Wren. I'll shoot some food when I get the chance.
They are very comfortable with me indeed because I do have a good relationship with them.
I play with them, say jokes, criticize what's wronge, I am nice with them, etc.

David - there is something wronge here: I am nice with them. This doesn't sound to me. I mean I am kind and gentle. How should I say it ?
(now David you have become my English/American teacher)

The light is natural but I have to go there at about 11h in the morning at this time of the year, because of the position of the sun. Other way it goes to a not so better position.

You can see a little of the light coming into the room ...

I've thrown my food away after thinking about who I just saw handle it-

and if I thought about it too much, I'd probably never eat out-

I do understand you George.
The other day we were reading in the papers - and everybody knows this - that people in Vietnam eats dogs.
We have been in the Indoshina Peninsula some 6 times. I am almost sure that in those little pieces of meat in the soup there must have been a piece of dog.
And I ate it !
What can I do ?
Just a little example of food, but in Malaysia.

But you talking about dirt. That's different and not good.
Of course in Portugal there are also restaurants not very clean ...
But where in the World, isn't there such a thing ?

Thank you for the kind comment.
After beeing here for a little more than a year I have improved my photographic skills and I pay more attention to the pictures I take and try to tell a story on them.
My wife was telling me yesterday at dinner that I not sellective enought. She mean I bet more on quantity than in quality.
May be she is right but often, I like my pictures in on aspect and this makes me post them.

One thing I have learned so far: we have to shoot many pictures even similar ones and mainly, on these situations where people are involved.
One for the expression, one for the light, one for the experiment, one with flash, one withuout flash, etc. etc..

The one you liked was shot with flash ETTL II 1/3 (or was it 2/3 ?) of it's power. I like that aspect because we have almost no perception of it, which I think is a benefit.

Antonio, I love your cook's photos. They just brought an image to mind that probably only those familar with Adam Sandler would appreciate. (American comedian) My son plays Sandler's "Lunch Lady Land" on his MP3 player all the time. Your photos just brought a visual meaning to the song.

Feel free to come on up to Alaska- we have lots of beautiful things to take pictures of! Just yesterday I saw two different cow/calf moose combos that were stunning. (My suggestion though, wait for summer!)

When I was shooting I thought that someone asked me about the food itself.

They were doing the food you can see which was a good oportunity, because they have been there quite a while ding their work.
