Spring skiing in the mountains

The winter has been so strange and untypically warm that all of us avid skiers haven't really been able to enjoy our favorite winter sport. All throughout March, the temperatures ranged from 15-20 degrees Celsius (60-70 Fahrenheit) and the snow was disappearing quickly even in the mountains. So I decided to take a day off in the middle of the week and go skiing to one of the few resorts in Slovenia that still has snow.

It was a glorious day, to say the least, and the snow lasted until about 1 p.m.; afterwards, it was more like water-skiing! :rofl

I had a camera with me and captured this:

1. From the top of the mountain:

2. Don't you just love that blue snow in the shade? :D

3. Which way to go?

4. Smog in the valley:

5. Go heavy on PS Levels to cut through that smog and this is what you get: :D

6. Patterns of wind:

7. Winter on the mountain, spring in the valley:

8. Woohoo, we're above Triglav (Slovenian highest mountain)! :barb

Sorry for posting so many photos, I just couldn't make a smaller selection. :dunno
But if you still want to see more piccies, you can find them in my gallery.

As always, comments and critique appreciated!

Lovely photos, Ana! It bothers me when I'm skiing and the valleys are green but I'm amongst the white. But your landscapes are still gorgeous!

I especially love the compositions of 3, 4, and 8.

This looks like a great day!

I really enjoy the variety of images you take. The patterns of wind and two seasons are my favorite. BTW, what does a day pass cost?

funny you feel that way, I too have contemplated this while skiing and end up with a sense of extreme altitude which becomes surreal and pleasingheadscratch.gif

Very nice. I love to see other people's travel/adventure photos like this, especially in other areas of the world. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! The feeling when you're skiing and everything is covered with snow is definitely different from what I experienced - when I got back to the valley, it was so warm I had to strip down to a T-shirt (well, and pants :D). But it snowed again a few days ago, so hopefully I can enjoy some more skiing this winter/spring!

Thanks, Marc! I try my best - even if I only have a small compact camera with me.
A day pass costs 25€, which is about US$33. I take it you're a skier as well?

I was lucky enough to have two trips this year, the first week was really poor weather. The visibility was so poor you could not see if you were stationary or not which made carrying a camera dangerous but I tucked a 30D with 24-105 inside my jacket against my ribs. 1 that's alot of money and 2 those are my ribs. The second trip was a boys trip, speed, moguls and blue skys. I really don't like my system, and hate skiing with a back pack. How do you carry an SLR when skiing?

I am thinking that the only way to go is to get a point and shoot but then I can always use my cell phone

But it is not the same... Iwould love to be able to carry a camera more securely but I haven't worked it out yet

Oh, I would never carry a DSLR and an expensive lens when skiing. I ski way too fast and aggressively for that. Aggressively to me and my legs, not the other skiers, that is. :D Admittedly, I haven't fallen in a few years, but I would be much too scared to take any risks with a heavy and expensive camera on me. I just take my trusty compact camera, Canon A80. Buy one and forget about cell phones. They are rubbish and can't compare, from what I've seen.

I'm not sure everybody would be happy if I shoved 29 photos down their throats. :D
