Looks cool, but what this?
JK. Haven't seen/used one of these in 5 years, at least. Not sure what good it is?

I could've easily dropped it from the configuration, but then I remembered that my pre-teen daughter was recently complaining about the total lack of 3.5" floppy drives at home. When I pointed out to the pool of USB 2.0 ports and 256Mb USB key I recently gave her, she explained that at school they only have
<drum roll>
APPLES, WHICH OBVIOUSLY DO NOT HAVE ANY OTHER DEVICES TO TALK TO THE OUTER WORLD!
</drum roll>
So, you see, those darn apples made my - otherwise pretty decent machine - look like crap..
Cheers!
I think Nic was waiting for that question!

But hey, if apples still use it, and my Helen has to work with them at school, it was my duty as a caring father to provide her with at least that way of data transportation, right:-)
Cheers!
Thanks man!
Cheers!
Other than the internet, huh?

Nik, I can't remember the last Apple machine that came with a floppy drive.

but what can I do if they use them at school? (David, I'm talking about Los Cerritos Middle School).
Actually, I know.. I have few old PC boxes at home and few 17-19" CRTs, I'll probably donate them to the school. Still have some time until April 15th:-)
Cheers!

But she told me (and I have no reason to not believe her) that the browser they have on those, mm, apples does not work very good with a lot of modern websites
Cheers!
Nah, just pulling your leg, but it would have way better performance , not trying to make you a convert or anything....
So, ehm, Windows huh??? Guess that makes 2 of us Enjoy your new system (no need to say that I guess )
Cheers Nik!!

Only newest (and better supported schools) were able to provide new PCs for the students. Majority is on a tight budget and have to deal with apples, no funds to upgrade.
No wonder with each generation we're getting users who don't know even the most elementary things about he 'puters (what's a floppy; how to set up an internet conenection; how to replace RAM or videocard, etc.), because all they knew at school was mac, four or five basic mac apps - and nothing else...
Cheers!
My friend helped me to set it up, and I got a web/ftp/mail/file server running in a pretty much automated mode. Machine was old, so no new OS could run on it, but I simply put a 20Gb HDD and it was OK.

Did you already get your air tickets?
Cheers!
Any Mac with a floppy drive is pre-iMac, that is, pre-1998. Ancient history. Unless they've got external floppies. The problem isn't that they're on Macs, the problem is that they're underfunded and aren't able to upgrade. A PC that old would have the same problem, would it not? No USB, no Firewire, etc. Macs were SCSI at that point, and what were PCs, serial? I don't know.

the tickets are in.. Man am I excited I've got to do some nice business deals so I can get a Sigma 50-500 that would be invaluable to me besides my current setup and I think I will enjoy it very much for some DGrinner candids
almost time for bed now... in 6 hours my alarm clock will be annoying my ears, for what seems to be an eternity :cry

I'm not much of an apple-historian..
WIth PCs, however, you can upgrade piece-by-piece, so it's not that cost-prohibitive. Not that it always helps, and eventually you just must bite the bullet. But still, you can salvage a lot of hardware this way. I'm not sure if you can do this on Macs. ANd even if you do, you need to be a "genius" to do it, while every not-totally-brain-damaged 12 year old can assemble/disassemble a pc..
I'm excited too!
Have a good nite!
Development, Internet, PS and FPS:-)
I'm kinda positive linux cannot do last two yet:-)
Cheers!
But back to the topic at hand, are those apples so bad that she can't even transfer a 1.44mb file home?
Funny...I never thought there was such a thing as a wintel bigot.

Even from Windows at work to a MAC at home. Eudora works on both OSs of course.

But Dell service, that's another story. How about spending a day on the phone and then being humg up on. I'm in charge of buying computers for my group and Dell just lost it a few years back. Have things changed? I used to love them, but then we just had nothing but badness for about a year.
On the other hand, I really can't tell you a good notebook service story right now. I think maybe Apple is OK cause you can go to the Apple store. I guess if you only have a dog slow processor to sell, you need something: a cool looking case and real service.
On the otherhand, calling Apple, I almost always get straight to a human, and that human usually speaks English fluently. Too, that human has fixed my issues immediately, with the exception of one time (the iView/iPhoto thing) and that's probably not their problem, but mine.
If I find myself in a position to buy another Wintel machine (not likely), I'm going down to Central Computer in Santa Clara, and having them build one for me. My last AMD box was built there, was a great price, and support was local...I just took my box to them and they fixed it.
If DELL stock didn't consistently move northward, I'd have sold it a long time ago.
FWIW, IMHO, YMMV, don't operate heavy machinery after reading this post.

Moral: Why be a dweeb? No computer is perfect. No computer company is on your side. No piece of software (os or application) is without bugs or warts. Grow up. Do your own benchmarks if it matters a lot. Be empirical.
