Haven't picked up the camera all winter to take shots of the kids until now. So out of practice! Thought I would take advantage of the spring weather and snap a few of my daughter and our dog...Abbey sharing some ice cream.138074074-M.jpg138073815-M.jpg

Thanks for the compliment. I would be more than happy to share with you. I have had several people ask me about my conversions lately and I need to document the steps. I actually convert to BW using a gradient map conversion that I got out of Kevin Kubota's 'Bootcamp" book with some tweaking using the shadow/highlight tool, selective color (black, white and neutral only), masks and in the end duplicating the layer with the mode set to soft light and or overlay and reducing the opacity. Sounds like alot but it really doesn't take too much time.

I hope I can explain it correctly and will work on putting the steps down and sending them to you.

If this is what you accomplish after a winter's break you should do so every year because these are simply, terrific. thumb.gif

George correctly directed you the 'tutes for posting guidelines... you can post more than one image per post when linking rather than attaching.

Wonderful series of shots and one of the best conversions I've seen in a while. I'd love to try your conversion as well.....any chance of you writing a tutorial on it and posting? Let me know! :saurora

When you do post it, could you post a link here to that thread. Otherwise it might be a little difficult to find it. Thanks

I would post it in the Finishing School with an appropriate title so it can be easily searched for future reference....but like Scott wisely suggested, if you post a link here it would be great! Thanks in advance!

    Excellent images

Unfortuanately, if my wife saw similar events happening at my house, I would be sleeping with the dog for taking pictures instead of intervening!!

    Shane,
Thanks ever so much for the very quick response to the request for the tut! I just read it through and will have a go of it later this afternoon - if I can find the time (the honey do list is quite long this week end and I have a shoot this evening!). The tut looks very complete and completely understandable. Love it.

You are welcome. Glad I could give something back to those on Dgrin. Hope the conversion works for you. It is the tweaking of course after converting that really does it for the tones. Post a pic if you do one using the steps. Would like to see it.

    Nice method
Here are two different versions: the first being the tute (thanks for that!), the second is using gradient mapping with masks and curves/painted in the areas I wanted. Since I'm still using PS7, there is no shadow/highlight feature per se but have ways around it.

    Shane's version (thanks again....cool way to b/w)

A version with some additional tweeking using the cool gradient mapping

I sure hope you don't mind that I played a little with your picture. Hard for me to work on one that has already been converted. Used the shadow/highlight tool on this as well as selective color layer (adjusted black and neutral slightly), dup the layer and set to soft light and reduced opacity, adjusted some in curves and of course masks used to paint back in areas that were too dark or too light.
