private gallery question

Yesterday I was reading a thread (which I can't find now) where someone said the following:

Even if you make a gallery private so that bad guys can't access it, if you post a photo from that gallery in a forum (like dgrin), then you're giving people a back door to get into that private gallery and steal your images.

Is this correct?

Thanks, just trying to learn about this issue.

I don't want the cheese, I just want to get out of the trap.

    That's not true.

    If you have a gallery:

    http://nickname.smugmug.com/gallery/XXXXXXX and it is private, it will NOT appear on your homepage. People need the url to go to it.

    If you post a photo from that gallery,
    http://nickname.smugmug.com/photos/XXXXXXX-L.jpg

    they'll have a link to that photo but not the gallery. Steal it? If you've embedded it in a forum or blog, it's out there and not protected anyhow.

    Block Originals, and nobody can access them :D
    Put a password on the gallery, don't allow external links (embedding in forum posts, blogs, etc) if you want total protection.

    Holler with more questions, we'll be here.
