OT: Need music ideas

I work from home a lot, and nearly always have some music playing.
I'm looking for some new non well-known artists to listen to.

Anything goes, except for techno/hardcore/etc. To give you an idea of what I listen to, today I've played Gotan Project, Dire Straits, Nicola Conte, Zuco103, KOOP, Aretha Franklin, Iron&Wine/Calexico and Kid Abelha (pretty widespread, huhh?) But like I said, nearly anything goes.

Lemme hear those personal favorites, unknown obscure bands, bad or good, but not something that is found on the front page of amazon or iTunes, etc. (It would help if they have atleast made a CD or have MP3 online, so I can listen to them as well)

Well, here's a mix of things you may not have heard of, or things that you may have forgotten about and should dig up.

    iTunes links:

Zap Mama (World harmonies with R&B and Soul, little Hip Hop mixed in)

Ozomatli (East Side LA mishmosh of styles. Much better live, this band is still worth checking out on CD.)

Greg Brown--The Evening Call (Folk. This album is really well produced.)

Alpha Blondy (Reggae--especially the album Jerusalem)

Ali Farka Touré & Ry Cooder There's also an album not on iTunes by Ry Cooder and VM Bhatt called "A Meeting By the River." Amazing.

    The Black Keys

    Buddy Guy

Dr. John (especially Dr. John's Gumbo.)

Handsome Boy Modeling School--So, How's Your Girl?

    Hot Tuna--Burgers

    Issa Babayogo

    Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros

    John Hiatt

    John Prine

Wilco, Peter Tosh, Bob Marley (of course), Skip James, Van Morrison with John Lee Hooker--Too Long in Exile, Muddy Waters.

Also, check out cmj.com for downloads of new, obscure music.

I've encountered some decently earcatching stuff ovr the past year, here's two of the best that my bleary, early morning mind can come up with. Some of it is on the broad outskirts of techno (insomuch that it makes use of electronic instruments and sequencers) but I'd really scarce to call it that.

Rob Dougan - Furious Angels: hardly new, this album came out severl years ago, but I just discovered it last year, and its one of the most mindblowing albums I'v ever heard. Layer trip-hop beats, an orchestral score and then Tom Waits-derived lyrics and you have a startingpoint as to what his music sounds like. The lyrical content is pretty melancholy, but it all works within the framework.

Ratatat - Classics: This album could easily be the soundtrack to the coolest movie that you've never seen, because it doesn't exist. Good thing the soundtrck does, though. Two guitarists and a drummer create some of the most imaginitive soundscapes you've ever heard. Its all instrumental though, that might put some people off.

Both of these are available on iTunes, so its easy to give'em a listen. thumb.gif

I like the Amadou & Mariam - Dimance a Bamako cd, very nice.

I've also been listening to (iTunes links)

Room Eleven - Six white Russians and a Pink Pussycat

Feist - reminder (Mac lovers will perhaps recognize the ninth song of the album).

Eva de Roover - de Jager (Flemish/Dutch lyrics)

Charlie Dée - love your life more mainstream

Still open to more suggestions ear.gif
