what do you suggest for a 300mm lens for my D50? <200$
But they are fun lenses to play with...if you can get one cheap I say go for it.
I think they are at least as much fun as a Lensbaby

it's not too bad but never as sharp as say a big Canon. With the way a
cat works, you can get some interesting bokeh (read donuts).
At the right price, you can have an ok lens and some real fun. Just know
what you're getting in to.
I don't own a D50, but I believe they require Af-S lenses in order to focus and meter properly. If this is the case, you are somewhat limited and have only a few lenses at 300mm to choose from.
If you want a zoom, your best bet is probably the 70mm-300mm VR Af-S. I don't own this lens, but I've seen many pictures from it and the owners seem to like it. Even at 300mm the images seem quite good. The only drawback is that as a consumer level zoom, it is quite slow (f4-f5.6 I believe). It is closest to you price point at $520.
If 300mm is your magic number, you could go with a prime lens.
I own both of the following and they are both excellent lenses but are a little out of your price range.
300mm, F4 AF-S can be found for $900. Great piece of glass for the money. Still not exceedingly fast at f4.
300mm, f2.8 VR AF-SII is $4,600.<img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/6029383/emoji/eek7.gif" border="0" alt="" > Yes that's right! I'm a bit ashamed to say I own this lens, but at 300mm, this lens cannot be beat. Maybe if you win the lottery?<img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/6029383/emoji/ne_nau.gif" border="0" alt="" >
Hope this helps.

"Your pictures are only as good as the glass in your lens."
...and...
"Opteka lenses are ground and polished to a precise precision"
Um, yeah. Anyone care to lay bets on just how good that glass is & how precise their precision is at $90? OK, smarta$$ mode off now, back to my corner.
BTW, these are the same guys who make the 650-1300mm lens at $300. It does make images...

@ Snarcher... Might I suggest you save up a few more $ and get a Nikon 300/4 ED-IF AF or AFD. Low end should run you between $400-600. Here are some sold examples:

BTW, I have the 300/4 ED-IF AF and find it's a bit slower than new AFS versions... but it's right for the price. You may also want to keep an eye on Craigslist in your area, KEH, Adorama or even put a WTB in the Flea Market...
