I was out having lunch and saw this across the street. For those of you who read my previous post about being harassed by cops, I've decided I'm not gonna let that incident control me and stop me from shooting when or where I want.

I find myself asking the same question when I look at pictures such as the one you have posted.

    "What's wrong at home?"

Why do these kids feel life is better on the street than at home with mum and dad? ne_nau.gif

    .....

When I was young and at school, they were so busy trying to teach you how to make a living, they never covered things like... how do you live when you have no income, or when things go horribly wrong in your life?

I don't know what the answers are, but I still think they need to teach these type of things to us when we are at school.

It's a big world out there, and not a happy or prosperous place for everyone, some folks have no idea what it is like to go without, and others carry more than their shoulders should carry.

    .........
A very thought provoking image ...... thank you for sharing.

Definitely a thought-provoking image. I just read "All God's Children- inside the dark and violent world of street families" by Rene Denfeld (it's about Portland street kids, but it's pretty much the same scene in most US cities) and I'm afraid I'll never look at street kids-- or the police-- in the same way. Some of these kids actually have loving homes-- it's just a lot more thrilling or a lot more 'drama' (their term, not mine) to live on the street.

And in the case of the police, often they're investigating violent crimes committed by these street kids-- but with a "snitches get stitches and end up in ditches" code on the streets, it's not always easy. We've had several recent brutal tortures followed by murders in Portland-- committed by street kids. Definitely scary.

Not saying the kids in this photo are criminals, of course.

I hate this from the cop's perspective. I look at this, and feel huge frustration at how little he can do to help at all. Good capture of the moment though, it's a pic with a lot of emotion.

    Excellent capture
Certainly a moving photograph. I also like the vivid processing making the faces and expressions of the teens tell the whole story of displacement.

Great shot... I used to live near Broadway in Seattle and this was far too common of a scene there.

Cool picture, but too much pp/ need less saturation and contrast.

Yeah I agree with what everyone else said...

But you know one more thing that find horrifying is that she is wearing.... legwarmers?

    When did those come back?

Great capture of a tough situation.
I really like your post processing which I think adds to the drama.
