probs uploading/time for tiger?

Right now I'm using mac os x v.10.3.9. I cannot use the mass download options, something about Java?, and the links to fix didn't help (but maybe I did something wrong). On my boyfriend's computer it is fine (10.4.9). Then recently I went to http://www.blurb.com and downloaded their software to create a photo book. When I tried to launch their program it said, "This app requires any version of Java 1.5, but only 1.42 and 1.31 are installed. Updating to a newer version of Mac OSX may resolve this." So with these two problems it looks like I need to go from Panther to Tiger, yes? Or should I wait for Leopard? The Apple store lists Tiger at $129 for single user. Is that my cheapest option?:(:

Yes, the Universal Drag and Drop and the Mac OS X Uploader do not work for me.:cry
