Cokin Filter Question

I am looking at a Graduated ND to go with my Canon 24-70 and a probable purchase of the 17-40. Specifically I am headed out west (Zion, North Rim GC, etc) in June. These have a 77mm diameter. So I got a Cokin P series based upon the recommendation of the salesman.
But after reading the catalog in the package, it seems I would need a Z-PRO to go below 28mm and the X-PRO to get below 20mm.
Any feedback or experience using these?
Also any opinions on which of their GNDs to get? I am specifically buying it to deal with the fact I will be in the canyon during the day and I want to adjust for the sky. I read another thread that talked about the Singh Ray, which have a 'soft' gradation and a 'hard' gradation, and another that talked about a minimum of a +3 stop filter.

The nice thing about the P system is that Singh-Ray and Lee (and others) make G-NDs for this system andof course the fairly compact size. The Singh-Ray looks great (the Galen Rowell model).
I have quite a few filters if your interested in buying I might be interested in selling

Lenses: Nikkor 50mm f/1.8, Nikkor 17-80mm f/3.5-4, Nikkor 70-300mm f/3.5-5.6, Lensbaby 2.0
Accessories: Nikon SB-800, (2X) Old Flash Units, (4X) Poverty Wizards, GF Lightsphere, (3X) Lightstand and umbrella, Sandisk Extreme III 4.0 GB, Sandisk Ultra II 2.0 GB, Transcend 1.0 GB
Cokin P set-up on the 17-40 will start to intefere around 24mm, if you get the Cokin ultrawide holder you gain around 4mm and can get it down to 20mm. I would suggest slimline screw in filters or even as previously suggested the Lee system
