Define "fill-flash" for me please .

I have heard different views on what fill-flash is . Are we just talking about normal flash in a setting where most people wouldn't think of using flash ?
[or for eg; "Automatic" mode would not turn on flash ] .
Or is it a weaker setting of normal flash ?

Fill flash is where the flash is not the main light. It is just used to fill in the shadows. It should be a couple stops below the ambient light.
