The last of the bee shots. Minimal post processing, no cropping, and the only sharpening is whatever Elements 5's RAW editor and Noise Ninja apply by default (like all my photos).

All Canon gear: Xti (manual mode, F10, 1/200, ISO 100) + 1.4 teleconverter + 25mm extension tube + 100mm macro lens (about 2x). MR-14EX ring flash set to a 4:1 ratio and -1/3 FEC. Lots of patience...

    Lovely detail :)
Think I prefer your not so closeup shots though (ie environment +bee).

I've been trying a little bit of both -but I need more practice shooting above life size. I'm gonna try to figure out a way to leave the tube and TC on the camera and switch from natural light (up to life size) to using the flash without changing anything. So I'll have environment to twice life size of everything that I shoot...

They are all about the same size, but the angle determines how much of the frame they will fill up.

If they were any bigger we would be in some serious trouble... eek7.gif

Hi John, I see you've been having fun with bees again :D
I too like to get in close, but having viewed so many of your images now.
I prefer your not so close shots too, and I can now see the advantages of not getting in all that close.

Don't get me wrong, I like you close one's too, but your shots of the entire bug have more depth in them clap.gif

I wish it was me posting bug shots, but danged if I can find any :cry

I like taking both types of photos. I think the distance shots are more artistic, and the above life size shots are more text book in nature (more detail). From the reaction I've seen on Flickr the shots above life size are more popular. Take this shot for example. Most of those A+++ awards hit the comments section in less that an hour...
