ok, i have a "dumb" question. I noticed that one of the "prongs" in my compact flash card reader is bent over and obviously not going in the approriate space in the CF card. I am able to bring my photos up, but i am wondering if some "date" is missing. I am in Peru and i cant run out to best buy or wherever to buy a new one.

does anyone know if the reader can work if it is missing a "prong"¿:scratch

thanks

Dave

    It depends on WHICH pin.

Several are essential for 8 bit, several for 16 bit functions, a few are grounded and a few are essentially "open". If you lucked out and it is one of the non-essential pins that is bent in the reader (the photos are TRANSFERRED okay onto the computer), then I would continue to use it but be on the lookout for a new unit as soon as possible.

Here is one of many pin-out diagrams. Note the NU and NC (not used and not connected) pins. http://pinouts.ru/Memory/CompactFlash_pinout.shtml

A handy tip for anyone with bent pins in card readers or similar devices: Use a ball point pen refill (metal one) - the hollow tube is usually just the right size to fit on the pins and bend them back into place.
