picturesque definition?

I know it can mean different things to different people. So, I am trying to figure out if my definition is anything close to other's in trying to maybe select an entry. I have in mind which of the following photos, or types of photos I might enter, but curious about other's opinions.

Is it legal for me to seek input on shot "type" selection, or is that a 2 stroke penalty?

Would you normally consider which of the following more picturesque?

1. rustic Amerirca with natural elements

http://www.fotogafer.com/photos/141575789-M.jpg

2. Scenic Mountain vista

http://www.fotogafer.com/photos/141265868-M.jpg

3. A creek meandering down a hill with varied vegitation, rocks, pretty tree in bloom.

http://www.fotogafer.com/photos/141018367-M-2.jpg

4. A peaceful animal in natural surroundings?

http://www.fotogafer.com/photos/141014593-M-1.jpg

5. Lastly, maybe it's flowing water in a lush setting?

http://www.fotogafer.com/photos/141763453-M.jpg

My definition of picturesque is typically a pretty picture that I could either imagine myself in, or dream about. Or maybe it just means a place is picturesque for this moment in time.

I don't see flowers by themselves as picturesque. Because they are something you can't really get into. now a field of flowers, you could sit in, yes, picturesque.

Anyway, opinions welcome. Then I will decide if any of above meet criteria, or if I can improve it. however, I say I had a productive photo week the week of April 2 spending 4 days in the Smokies.

I can see all of them (exept possibly the deer) being picturesque. But I take a pretty wide view on the definition.

I think don't worry about the definition and go shoot! If it says pictoresque to you, it will be fine to enter.

I kind of envision Hansel and Gretal's cottage. However, that is not what I want to enter.

I wouldn't agonize too much over it. People have different perceptions of what "picturesque" is. The best you can do is hope that your idea of "picturesque" matches that of the judges.

All the photos you've shown us are lovely. Just pick the one that moves you the most, submit it, and hope for the best. :D

15524779-Ti.gif If you have read any of the judges critiques from the first two LPS contests, you will find that the ability of a photograph to move the judges is a very important element in how it is evaluated. Of course, what moves you may not be what moves the judges, so the best you can do is submit your best effort and please yourself!

    Good luck.

I don't think that's entirely true. It's quite concievable that there could be a good deal of irregualrity in a very picturesque image.

Nowhere, at no moment have I ever thought of the opposite of irregular being picturesque.

Taking that a bit further (farther?), I was think the Taj Mahal might be appropriate.

In my mind the opposite of irregular is regular?

    well, i was being a bit cheeky.:saurora

I just meant that for the purposes of this challenge, the theme is setup to be contrasting themes....one as counterpoint to the other.

regardless, everyone (including myself) is thinking way too hard about interpreting the words. gut reactions rule!

I'd tend to agree that the correlation between Picturesque and irregular is an indirect one rather than being direct polar opposites. I just see no relationship. Only Regular IE... Normal would be opposite of Irregular.

Picturesque is anything but regular. But maybe their intent was to describe the antithesis of picturesque as the other theme, that I can't say. Wow, I'm quite analytical this morning, ha.

If you read up on the picturesque movement you will find that William Gilpin, a major definer of the picturesque movement of the 1800s, considered the irregularity of landscapes to be a key element if picturesque...... but that's if you decide to stick to that particular definition of picturesque. I believe the two topics can be extremely tied together or completely seperate depending on the preference of the image maker and the image he is trying to make.

Was ready to post this at deadline, well, Smugmug required me to log in 2 times, and go back to main page before it would actually work or I would have MET deadline.

    So, here's my entry.
