and add that to my compact flash and plug it into my laptop will that download the pictures???

I have one usb plug on my laptop and that one will be plugged into the external hard drive.. At shows this summer, I'll be shooting drop a card off to my assitant for them to download, while I go off with another disk....

Will this do what I want it to...and do I have to think of anything special for my laptop....??? Or are those ports universal??

I am such a dummy with stuff like this...wanna be sure before I purchase!

Thanks in advance!

I use something similar and it works pretty well. I use a "Kodak Picture Card Adapter".
    http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=480&pq-locale=en_US

This is used with a universal USB to IDE cable, so that I can attach either an external CD burner or IDE HD.

While it works fine, the transfer speed is kinda slow. It seems that my laptop becomes saturated quickly, causing a bottleneck in transfer. Be sure to test your system to make sure the speed is acceptable for your needs.

a usb hub...is that something I can plug into my one usb plug in and it will give me multiple holes to plug into???

I wondered if those existed! That would probably work better then I can just get a card scanner...does this slow down the transfer...

If I understand you correct...do you have a suggestion for a name that I should look for? are they common and easy to find???

Extremely common, shouldn't slow down transfer speed, hopefully you have a usb 2.0 port. If not I would get this setup.

I have one of this type of adapter (not sure of brand without looking). It was originally purchased to use compact flash rather than memory stick in an old Sony D770 camera. It also worked well to transfer to computer with the only drawback being that you had to click to safely remove before changing the card in it. Not sure how speed of download compares anymore.

I have since gone to a PC Card - CardBus - adapter that adds USB 2 ports (as mentioned by others in this thread). What I have is 4 port rather than 2 and uses an ac adapter (plugs into electric outlet). It was mfg. by Buslink but I don't remember the date I got it. I have used it to add such things as external hard drive, external CD-RW drive, card reader; all while using a laptop running Win 98SE. Since getting a laptop with XP Pro (and more USB 2 ports) have connected my scanner and printer as well as card reader. The idea of putting scanner & printer on those ports is almost creating my own port replicator in that I can remove the PC Card before taking the laptop along without having to take out the individual cords.

Hope this helps some; although I don't use it for transfer at events.

    Thanks everyone for th eresponses!

I went last night and looked at both the options...I didn't realize that the hub adaptor would also need to be plugged in...All the store had was one that converted to 4 hubs...it just wasn't what I needed...then amazingly they had the memory card adaptor..so I bought it with the ability to return it if necessary...so far it's working well...doesn't seem any slower than the one that I have for my pc...so I am going to use this for now...If I find any drawbacks I'll have to search ebay for the other option!

Thanks again..I knew I could count on you folks for help!!!clap.gif

Here are some other options. I have an Iogear SD reader that works very well, as well as a multireader.

USB Hubs to increase the number of ports available to you, they don't have to have external power to read memory, but some other devices might require a powered hub.

These are all cool replies, but I would recommend the Lexar cardbus reader. It reads CF faster than those cheaper cards, and its performance is very satisfactory, sometimes it even downloads faster than my usb 2.0 does :P.
