Have you looked at the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8? Very good optics and much cheaper (and lighter) than the Canon. Too short for sports, but it would be a nice complement to the 70-200 when you get it. Another great walk around lens is the Canon 24-105 f/4L.

I found a used canon 24-70 lens for $600.00 but the only hold back is the weight..I will look at the other lens..thanks

Most f/2.8 constant aperture lenses will be a little heavy. There is no getting around that since the wide aperture requires larger lens elements.

The Tamron 28-75 f2.8 DI is an exception, though. Small, lightweight, and sharp as a tack. Mine is over four years old and still valued by me.

I also own an EOS 24-70f2.8, but it weighs almost three times as much to carry. The little Tammy is a jewel.

If you can buy a Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L that is in decent condition for $600 you'd better snap it up. Even if you don't want to keep it you could re-sell for a couple hundred dollar profit. That is a killer price!!!

I second the recommendations for the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. On a camera with a cropped sensor it is an outstanding lens. Its not too bad on a full frame camera either though there is some light fall off at the edges. You can't go wrong with this lens. If you need a wider lens you might also wish to check out the more recent Tamron lens, the 17-50. That lens is for cropped cameras only.

    Have fun!

15524779-Ti.gif I haven't seen any for that price; you can't lose.

Personally I don't find the weight a problem & figure it's worth it for the capabilities. If you need that particular focal length range an 2.8 speed IMHO it's unbeatable short of a collection of primes--and that's a close thing.
