Ants at twice life size

I really should have used a diffused, bounced flash for these shots (still kicking myself for not having the bounder with me!).

All canon gear: Xti (manual mode F11, 1/200, ISO 100) + 1.4 teleconverter + 25mm extension tube + 100mm macro lens. MR-14EX set to a 4:1 ratio and -1/3 FEC. Minimal post processing.

    Lovely series with good detail- At least you have black ants there- the black ants in the UK are brown :)

    Lovely series with good detail- At least you have black ants there- the black ants in the UK are brown :)

    kinda like our squirrels, but the opposite (red squirrels are dark brown).... damn interbreeding

    nice shots mate, great exposure and detail.

    I'm about to send my b/f to Home Depot and get that Fire Ant killer stuff. These guys bugging the heck out me, not even talking about their nasty bites.. deal.gif

    Not sure how big your ants are but the once found around my place are smaller than the No 2 Font in this post.

    It's interesting to see your Black Ants up so close, their body structure is quite amazing.

    You've picked up some great detail in these little guys.

    Thanks Skippy! I've got some ideas that should give me a softer light for next time.

    There are several species of ants out on the farm, but that particular one is pretty big. At 2x I've only got 11mm of horizontal space to work with (the 22mm length of the sensor / 2) and I had a hard time getting some of the ants completely in the frame. Big enough to carry off not just your lunch but the picnic basket as well... eek7.gif
