smugmug emergency maintenance - 11pm PST Feb 2

One of our RAID controllers has wedged, so I'm going to monkey with it late tonight/early tomorrow morning.

It still functions, and we're able to read/write data to the RAID arrays associated with it, so I don't think we'll run into any catastrophes, but you never know. Keep your fingers crossed. :)

I should note that all data on smugmug is stored in more than one location, so even if we did have a catastrophe, there shouldn't be any permanent data loss for anyone. We've tested this out a few times, and it works in practice, not just in theory.

Hopefully it won't take too long, so I can minimize downtime.

Thanks,

Don

UPDATE: I just had to put my cat, Cara, to sleep suddenly (she was diagnosed with a pretty bad form of cancer), so I'm not going tonight. Tomorrow night (the 2nd) is the new plan.

Don, I lost Maddie in 2004 after 13 years, it is a very hard thing. Her brother Sammie is rubbing up against me right now... So sorry to hear about your loss... keep your chin up.

Sorry about your cat. That's not fun, for you or for her.

Thanks for all the kind words, everyone. We miss her a lot. She was more than half-dead 4 years ago when we rescued her and two of her babies, and we fell completely in love with her as we nursed her back to health. Greatest cat ever (I feel a littly guilty saying that, since I have two others still whom I love, but she was).

    Photos of Cara

Being the owner of smugmug has its perks, so I also just acquired SweetCara.smugmug.com for her as a memorial. :) Most of those photos, and more, will move over there soon.

On a positive note, maintenance went fine and we didn't have any data loss. :) Turned out to be a battery backup module the failed, and we have spares on hand, so it was no biggie.

    Take care, and thanks again.

    Don
