Well the DVD indicates that it makes no real difference. I think its just supposed to help improve flash recycling time and save your batteries some; at least that is what he says on the DVD that comes with the Lightsphere cloud.
I haven't used one of these, nor have I fallen for the LS (aka the Doctor Fad of Photography's latest money making incarnation). But some of the guys I work with (that don't mind looking like total dorks with tupperware on their flash, and use quantum batteries) have modded their LS with tin foil to give a similar effect, more forward flash, and better efficiency. Try the foil first, I mean if your ok with having one kitchen utensil on your flash why not add something else from the larder.

Makes me wonder what happened to the good old index card? Still works fine for me when I do use a flash (and I like that the 580EX and Metz58 have a built-in one).
