Publishing software

As a personal project, I'm trying to gather a few photos from the past and a few from most recent times and create a hardcover portfolio book (blurb, lulu, etc).

I've done a short book with lulu and apollo before, but they were at most 80 pages and very simple (editorially speaking). I've created individual pages on photoshop and then converted to pdf and merged in one big pdf. I know it's not the best way to assembly a book.

For this project, I have microsoft word, but having written many technical papers (academic boring stuff), I know how hard ms-word can be at times, especially if you're not following the letter-writting workflow.

So here's my question, I don't want to spend the money on quark xpress or pagemaker for a simple personal portfolio book, so what software do you recommend for this task? I'm looking at MS-Publisher, I'll probably will download a trial and see what it's like, but I'm open for other alternatives...

Cheers

I've always used Serif PagePlus with great success. You could give that a try - it's very versatile.
